Knock on Wood

A History of Sex (Auto-Erotic), 1996.

Andreas Serrano is, of course, most famous for his artwork Piss Christ. It may be important to view all of the works in this series to put this in a larger context.

When I saw that write-up about Andreas Serrano's artwork called: "Xxss Christ," it struck a chord with me.

Sometimes what we call "artwork" is just "trash" in the minds of those who view it. At other times, the artist takes license with what he views as art, which to others is just trash; as it conflicts with moral views.

I'm sure that you view "art" in a particular perspective, because you are SO interested it, and make some appropriate comments on the photos you display.

Back to the comment you made on "Xxss Christ." To me, it brings up our Destinies. Do You KNOW where You are going?

Perhaps you DO. But, then again...you just may learn something NEW...

DID YOU KNOW THAT YOU CAN ACTUALLY READ "CODES" RIGHT OUT OF YOUR OWN BIBLE, that "CONTROL" your Destiny?

Thank you for your response and enthusiasm, but I would question your CRITERIA for judging art that is "trash."

You mention "conflicts with moral views." This comment touches on an extremely important point and that is, who determines these morals? What may be appropriate to you, may not be to me. That said, OUR objections or acceptance should not determine whether an artwork be deemed "appropriate." Furthermore, what actions do you propose for art that is not deemed "appropriate?" Censorship?

Also, "taking license with what he views as art" is an extremely important issue. One of the roles of artists is to raise this pertinent question. In fact, post-modern artist use this device quite often.

Obviously, Serrano's work has had an impact on you personally. It has struck a chord and can give all of us an opportunity to strengthen or perhaps even question our beliefs.

Last, I do not follow your response. You mention destinies and do not see how that relates to the posted work.

The power of art is its ability to raise questions...

provocative post, raises issues worth talking about.

i notice that the linked article is ten years old, am wondering what mr serrano's more recent work looks like?

also, a wikipedia search eventually led me to this list of "transgressive artists" you might find interesting.
