It depends on one's intentions as artist. If you're going to participate in the marketplace and/or if you're work is going to be widely visible in a public way, then public perception of your person as artist will play a role in how your work is considered and positioned. At the very least, it behooves the artist to understand and be aware of how public perception of us as personalities may or may not influence how our work is read.
